A physio might not be your first choice when thinking about who can help you with your jaw problems. However, physiotherapists with a special interest in jaw pain and movement disorders, known as TMDs or temporomandibular disorders, can help you understand why your jaw is causing you so much trouble and devise some treatment and home management strategies to ease your problems.
Our TMJ team is headed by Andrew Clarkson who has been a physiotherapist for over 30 years. He has a Masters degree in Orthopaedic Physiotherapy and is a titled APA Sports & Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, along with being a member of the Australian College of Physiotherapists. Alicia Fernandes and Mark Mitchell work with Andrew and bring great skill, experience and understanding of these problems. The three physios work together to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the latest options in treating TMJ disorders, but don't be surprised if they also look at your neck, posture and core strength and discuss the triggers for your symptoms in a holistic 'problem solving' approach. For more information about our physios, see the 'About Us' section of this website.
We believe strongly in educating people as to the causes leading to their problems and the ways in which people can assist in helping themselves.
Andrew works at our Highgate practice most of the time, also spending two mornings a week at the Wakefield Sports + Medicine Clinic in Angas Street, Adelaide. Alicia and Mark both work part-time at Highgate.
